One of the best things you can do for your oral health is to make regular dental visits for teeth cleanings and exams. Here are a few benefits you can expect from those visits.
A dental crown is basically a protective cap that permanently covers your tooth. It’s shaped exactly like your natural tooth, and it restores the strength, function, and appearance of a damaged tooth.
Traditionally, getting a crown means squeezing two dental appointments into your busy schedule. At your first visit, your dentist takes impressions and sends them to an off-site lab to make your custom crown. In a week or two after your crown is completed, you return to the dentist so they can cement it in place.
But advancements in technology have streamlined tooth repair, so now you can go home with your new crown the same day. At Silicon Valley Dental Associates in Sunnyvale, California, our team offers same-day crowns using the innovative CEREC system.
The most obvious reason to get a same-day crown is convenience — instead of returning for a second visit, you can get through the process in a single day. But that’s not the only reason.
Same-day crowns offer numerous advantages over traditional options, including:
Plus, a same-day crown lasts just as long as traditional options, but they only take 2-3 hours.
You could need a crown for several reasons, such as:
Both same-day and traditional crowns address these issues. However, if you have a fracture below your gum line or heavily grind your teeth, a traditional crown might provide better results.
To make sure you’re an ideal candidate for a same-day crown, we perform a comprehensive dental exam that includes digital X-rays. This allows us to examine your damaged tooth, its root, and your jawbone.
Once we confirm your oral health, we can start making your same-day crown. The process is similar to getting a traditional crown, except it uses advanced technology — we mill your custom crown on-site.
We take digital impressions of your tooth and jaw using CAD-CAM technology — computer-aided design (CAD) and computer-aided manufacturing (CAM). This approach eliminates the human error that can come with using a putty mold to take a physical impression.
The computer captures a precise 3D image of your tooth and crown. We can even replicate the ridges and indentations of your existing tooth exactly if desired. After finalizing the design, the milling machine carves your custom crown from ceramic.
It takes 45 minutes to an hour for us to make your custom crown. When complete, we bond it securely in place on top of your existing tooth. Once in place, you care for a crown like your natural teeth by brushing twice a day, flossing daily, and getting professional teeth cleanings every six months.
