Dental Implants Q&A

What are dental implants?

Dental implants are small metal posts, usually made of titanium, that supports dental crowns, dental bridges, or implant-supported dentures. Dental implants don’t rely on your remaining healthy teeth for support. Instead, your Silicon Valley Dental Associates provider places them into small incisions in your gum line.

Following surgery, your jaw bone grows around each implant, fusing them in place. This means you don’t have to rely on sticky or messy adhesives to hold them in place. Additionally, dental implants mimic your natural teeth. There are no cleaning solutions required, just brushing, flossing, and regular dental appointments.

What is the process of getting dental implants?

At Silicon Valley Dental Associates, getting dental implants begins with a complimentary implant consultation. During this appointment, your provider:

  • Evaluates your candidacy for implants
  • Discusses your smile goals
  • Reviews your treatment options
  • Answers all of your questions

Your provider also reviews your health history. Dental implants are safe and well-tolerated, but certain chronic health problems like diabetes or high blood pressure can increase your risk of complications. During your appointment, let your provider know about any prescription medications, vitamins, or nutritional supplements you’re taking.

What happens if I’m a good candidate for dental implants?

If your Silicon Valley Dental Associates provider determines you’re a candidate for implants, they take 3D images of your teeth and jaws using the in-office 3D cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scanner. This system uses a fraction of the radiation as traditional X-rays and provides you with 360-degree, 3D images of the interior of your mouth.

Your provider uses this information to measure the volume and depth of your bones to determine if you’ll need a bone graft or sinus lift. It also allows for accurate and safe implant placement.

After developing a treatment plan, your provider administers a local anesthetic to numb your tooth roots and gums. Next, they sterilize your mouth and surgically place a series of metal implants, one for each missing tooth. Following surgery, you return home and recover for 3-4 months.

Once your mouth heals, you return to Silicon Valley Dental Associates, and your provider takes impressions of your remaining teeth. They use these impressions to develop crowns, a fixed bridge, or implant-supported dentures.  A laboratory uses these impressions to manufacture your restorations.

At your final appointment, your provider bonds your crowns, fixed bridge, or implant-supported dentures to the metal posts, restoring your smile to a vibrant, healthy condition.
